The Tarbox Ramblers are well on their way to establishing a formidable presence in the world of roots music..... What separates the Ramblers [from their influences] is that their work, both interpretive and original, seems to possess a clear and present danger. Numbers like "Jack of Diamonds," "The Cuckoo," and "Stewball," highlighted by Daniel Kellar's mournful bowing, possess a specific gravity so often lacking in the efforts of groups of the Ramblers' ilk (that is, oriented toward, but not entirely given to, traditional pieces)...... On "Third Jinx Blues," "No Harm Blues" and "Down South Blues," Tarbox's guitar or turbulent slide guitar sets up a drone-undertow that, buttressed by Jon Cohan's primal drums, will grab fans of both the blues and the early Velvet Underground. --- JAMES ISAACS |
